Back to the Cabinet.

(English: The Haunted Castle) is a three-minute-long French film directed by Georges Méliès.

In my perpetual hunt through histories haus of horror, the beginning is a nice place to visit. Its composition and execution is traditional pantomime staging and although it was intended to entertain the audience (which it certainly does) rather that frighten it is still considered to be the first horror film. Le Manoir du diable  was released on Christmas eve 1896, at the Theatre Robert Houdin, Paris.
